Tonsillitis typically causes a person's tonsils to become visibly red and swollen. Doctors today are much less likely to recommend the removal of the tonsils, because it's now known that tonsils are a normal part of the body's immune system as they can help to filter out harmful bacteria and viruses that could cause serious infections.
