Risk Factors and Prevention of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer develops in stages and usually takes a long time to develop.
Risk factors for cervical cancer include:
- human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause cell changes that may become cancer
- being a daughter of a woman who used the drug diethylstilboestrol (DES) during pregnancy to prevent a miscarriage
- smoking, which increases the risk of cervical cancer fourfold.
A vaccine (GARDASIL) has been developed that prevents the types of HPV most commonly linked to cervical cancer

Screening for cancer is also a very important way of preventing cancer. Currently, there is screening for cervical cancer through The National Cervical Screening Program [Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing].
