National Drugs Policy

Drugs affect virtually every Australian family. Each year the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs accounts for more than one in six deaths, more than 185,000 hospitalisations and enormous economic costs to the health care system, law enforcement and private industry in Australia.

The National Drugs Campaign [Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing] is one of the campaigns under the National Drug Strategy and specifically aims to reduce young Australians' motivation to use illicit drugs by increasing their knowledge about the potential negative consequences of drug use. The Strategy aims to prevent and reduce the uptake of harmful drug use and minimise the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society by adopting a comprehensive approach which encompasses the misuse of both licit and illicit drugs.

For information on a range of drug issues, the Australian Drug Information Network  [(ADIN)]  website links to a comprehensive range of websites and information on alcohol and other drugs.

The National Drug Strategy [Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing] website links to information on the National Alcohol Strategy 2006 - 2011 [Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing] , the National Tobacco Strategy [Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing] and the National Drugs Campaign.
