Searching tips

You can search for a word, phrase or a combination of words and phrases by typing your search words in either the Quick Search box or the Advanced Search Text Search box. The HealthInsite search engine will automatically rank the items retrieved by your search so that the most relevant items are displayed first.

To search for items containing a word or phrase, type the word(s) or phras(s) in either the Quick Search box or the Advanced Search Text Search box. Wildcards are not necessary because the HealthInsite search engine automatically searches for words containing the term you have types, eg typing the term inhal will retrieve items with the words inhaler, inhalers, inhalation etc.

If your first search retrieves too many items (HealthInsite will only display the first 600 items of any search result), you can do any of the following:

1. Refine your search results by clicking on Refine Search at the top of the search results page, or

2. Try your search again in Advanced Search. Click on the Advanced Search button on the left hand navigation bar or the New Search button at the bottom of the search results page. Then use the 'Advanced Search' options to provide more search details, or

If your search retrieves items that are not as specific as you would like, you can try including more terms in your search. The search engine will be more likely to display the items that have all of the search terms nearer to the top of your results lists.

Under the Advanced Search and Refine Search Text Search boxes there are four options you can select to limit your search to specific parts of an information item. The default option is to search for your word(s) in any part of the text or metadata of information items.

Using Advanced Search of Refine Search you can also limit your search to a particular information type, audience, date when added to HealthInsite or language by selecting from the pick lists and radio buttons on the Advanced Search page. The options are:

Information for: you can select one of the radio buttons to find information targetted to children, young people, adults needing easy to read information, adults needing medium level information, and health professionals.

Items added or changed: you can search only for items that have been added or updated since or before a particular date, or in the last month, 2 months or 3 months.

Items updated: you can type in a date range (in any date format) or select dates from the calendar.

Non-English resources: you can select one of more languages from the list.

Information type: you can select one or more information types including: data, document, image, multimedia, software, sound, video, announcement, directory, form, guidelines, homepage, organisation, personal narrative, quiz, resources, service or statistics. Most HealthInsite items are 'resources' and 'documents', so selecting one of the other information types will retrieve a smaller, specific set of items.
