We also welcome two more new HealthInsite Information Partners, highlight some upcoming events in 2009, and provide you with the perennially popular holiday health tips.

On behalf of my hardworking colleagues here at the HealthInsite Team, we wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy 2009!

News Items

Pool safety - everyone can be a lifesaver

According to the Royal Life Saving Society Australia, an average of 35 Australian children under the age of five drown each year and half of these kids drown in a backyard pool. So this summer, the Society is asking everyone with a backyard pool to follow a simple checklist to help avoid a tragedy.

The Society's site has information on the home pool safety campaign, as well as specific fact sheets on water safety topics including supervision, fencing, water familiarisation, and resuscitation.

HealthInsite has topic pages on Water Safety and Child Safety.

Managing your blood pressure during the holidays

For thousands of Australians who have high blood pressure or some form of heart disease, staying healthy over the Christmas season can be difficult. People are more likely to drink more alcohol than they should, and to eat foods that are high in salt, fat, or sugar, while exercise programs often fall by the wayside.

The December 2008 edition of Australian Prescriber has an interesting article on healthy lifestyle changes for sufferers of hypertension in relation to smoking, nutrition, alcohol, and physical activity based on recently updated guidelines from the Heart Foundation.

HealthInsite has topic pages on High Blood Pressure (Hypertension), Alcohol, and Exercise.

Take care of your mental health over the holiday season

Christmas holidays are usually thought of as the time of year to relax and forget about the pressures of the year. For many Australians, the festive season can also be a time of increased stress, overwhelming pressure, disappointment, or loneliness.

One of HealthInsite's Information Partners, beyondblue, has issued a timely media release encouraging everyone to take care of themselves, their friends, and their family this holiday season. The beyondblue info line - 1300 22 4636 - will operate 24/7 over the holiday period for anyone needing information on depression, anxiety, and related drug and alcohol problems. beyondblue has also just released a new booklet, Taking care of yourself after retrenchment or financial loss, to help people look after themselves during these tough economic times.

HealthInsite has topic pages on Christmas - tips to reduce the stress, Holidays and anxiety - Q&A, The family and Christmas, and Managing grief at Christmas.

Your Feedback

At this time of the year, we always receive a significant number of requests to revisit health tips for the festive season. Please note that all of the ones highlighted below have been updated to reflect the current science.

Diet plans and sensible eating resolutions usually go out the window at Christmas time, as Christmas parties tend to include eating lots of celebratory foods that can be high in fats and sugar. HealthInsite information partner, Nutrition Australia, provides some tips on how to manage your Christmas eating habits so that you don't end up regretting your indulgences.

Christmas is also a time when many people indulge in a celebratory glass of champagne or three. For tips on how to manage alcohol intake over the festive season, check out this resource from myDr.

The Christmas season can be a stressful time, with so much to do and so little time to do it! Then there's the inevitable stress when the whole family gets together for a day of goodwill and togetherness! But for many, it is also a time of loneliness, especially following the death of a loved one or when circumstances mean that they have to be away from the people they care most about. These HealthInsite resources can help with coping with the holiday blues:

The summer holidays are a time when many of us like to have fun in the great outdoors, be it on a beach, camping, playing sport, or just soaking up the sights and sounds of summer. Unfortunately, the summer holidays are also a time for soaking up the solar ultra violet (UV) radiation that can cause painful sunburn, and may lead to skin cancer later on in life. HealthInsite has a number of resources on how to stay safe in the sun:
Sunburn explained
Sun protection
Quick tips for sun safety
Resource Guide for UV Protective Products

HealthInsite also has the following topic pages dealing with skin cancer:

Skin Cancer
Risk Factors and Prevention of Skin Cancer
Treatments for Skin Cancer

Hope that one, some, or all of these tips may be helpful to you! Please be safe and healthy this Christmas.

INFORMATION PARTNERS

We are delighted to welcome another two new Information Partners into the HealthInsite family:

Healthlinks.net provides free access to high quality, up to date information about medicines that are approved for use in Australia. The aim of the site (www.medicines.org.au) is to support the National Strategy for the Quality Use of Medicines. The goal of the strategy is to make the best possible use of medicines to improve health outcomes for all Australians.

The Ménière's Support Group of Victoria Inc (MSGV) is a non-profit, self-help organisation run mainly by volunteers. The MSGV aims to provide a high level of community support for people who have Ménière's disease.

myDr Relaunched

myDr is a trusted HealthInsite Information Partner, and one of the most popular health information websites in Australia. It has recently been relaunched with easier navigation, new functionality and content, as well as improvements to existing features such as the health care professional searches, and the support group searches.

New features include the A-Z health index allowing users to scan more than 2000 patient fact sheets on different health conditions quickly.

There is a new Medicines and Treatments section which includes the myDr Consumer Medicines Information leaflets database, the largest in Australia and myDr has also added the option of large-font format PDFs.

The health information search has been rebuilt to improve relevance of results and the speed of retrieval. In addition, the popular Search for a GP website has been re-introduced, allowing users to find a GP's practice website. Hot Tip

Where do I find the best evidence for a medical treatment?

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international not-for-profit and independent organisation dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of health care readily available worldwide. It produces and disseminates systematic reviews of health care interventions, and promotes the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions.

A systematic review summarises the results of available health care studies that have been carefully designed (controlled trials) and provides a high level of evidence on the effectiveness of health care interventions. Consumers and health practitioners can then work together to make the best possible decisions about health care.

These reviews are published electronically in successive issues of The Cochrane Library, and are freely accessible in shortened versions (abstracts and consumer summaries). By publishing electronically, reviews can be added to the Library and existing reviews brought up-to-date as new clinical studies are completed and reported.

The Australasian Cochrane Centre is one of a number of Cochrane centres established worldwide to coordinate the activities of the Cochrane Collaboration, and is a trusted HealthInsite Information Partner.
