HI Newsletter Vol. 1, Issue 3, sent 01 Oct 2003

Welcome to the third issue of the HealthInsite Newsletter. Last month
we looked at physical activity as part of our healthy lifestyle theme,
this month we focus on Nutrition.

We had a fantastic response to our hot tip about setting up a personal
profile last month. Lots of people took some time to create a profile
or to change their existing area of interest. If you're still having
difficulties please let us know. Don't forget that your area of interest
search is not automatically generated by a computer. One of our team
creates the search especially for you so it may take a few days depending
on how many requests we have.

To set up a personal profile go to:

Please feel free to also let us know if you have any problems or if
you have any suggestions for future editions by sending an email to

Spring has Sprung
------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know that the HealthInsite team is based in Canberra? And
spring has certainly sprung in this part of the world. Blue skies,
crisp mornings, blossoms, bulbs and native birds just outside my window!
It's easy to forget about the drought and water restrictions and that
many are still recovering from the bushfires earlier this year.

Despite the pressures of everyday life, this is the perfect time for
thinking about healthy living, healthy eating and getting out in the
fresh air. With school holidays, and warmer days just around the
corner, why not grab the kids, the dog and some friends, pack the
frisbee, sunscreen and some healthy snacks and enjoy a picnic at the
park, at the beach or anywhere that takes your fancy.

As we mentioned last month, HealthInsite is not just about diseases
and conditions. We also link to lots of resources to help you work
towards a healthier lifestyle. Just take a look at the topics map
to see the range of information available through HealthInsite.

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living
------------------------------------------------------------
Eating a well balanced, nutritious diet is critical for all of us
regardless of our age, sex, shape, occupation or where we live. It
doesn't have to be expensive or complicated and there are lots of
simple tips to help you make good eating choices.

To find HealthInsite healthy eating resources just type a relevant
word into the search box, for example, nutrition, recipe or healthy
eating. This will give you a list of resources and all you need to
do is click on the ones that interest you. A separate window will
open up showing you the resource on one of our information partner
websites.

We also have some topic pages that might be useful. Topic pages include
automatic searches that gather resources together under particular
topic headings. Some of the topic pages related to Nutrition are:

Diet and Pregnancy Topic Page

Nutrition Week - 12th - 18th October 2003
------------------------------------------------------------
National Nutrition Week is on again with the theme this year of 'ENERGY
- Balancing Food & Fitness'.

National Nutrition Week focuses on striking the right balance between
the energy we take in through food and drink and the energy we use
through our daily activity. The right balance helps us maintain a
healthy weight and good energy levels.

During Nutrition Week, Nutrition Australia,, on of our information
partners, will be launching a new book for families called 'The Secret
of Healthy Children'. With a foreword by nutritionist, Catherine
Saxelby, the book is designed to help families with children to develop
health lifestyle habits. It includes accurate and easy to understand
guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence and over 300 quick
nutritious recipes for meals, drinks, snacks and packed lunches.

Nutrition Week Kit go to:

Your Feedback - Where's the Colour?
------------------------------------------------------------
This month we've had lots of very positive feedback from our users
and some really useful suggestions. A big thankyou to everyone, your
comments are the best way for us to keep improving.

One of our users said that she loved the content but asked why there
isn't a more colourful version of the Newsletter.

We thought long and hard about producing a newsletter with graphics
and colour but we realised that there are a number of email systems
that have difficulties reading that sort of format. Some users would
end up with gobbledegook on their screen and links that don't work
so we've opted for the text only version that everyone should be able
to read.

We think the best option will be to keep the text-only email version
that we have now and provide a link to a 'prettier' version on our
website. We'll probably do that in the near future, but we want to
make sure that our subscribers are happy with the content first.
So far, according to your feedback, we seem to be on the right track
and a more colourful version shouldn't be too far away.

*-----------------What's in a Name?------------------*
Can you suggest a catchy name for the Newsletter?
All suggestions will receive a copy of '10 tips for
Safer Health Care' a new booklet by the Safety and
Quality Council. Just send your mailing address and
suggestion to
mailto:healthinsite.feedback@health.gov.au

Partner Spotlight - Professional Colleges
------------------------------------------------------------
Medical practice is constantly improving with new treatments to help
us live longer and more active lives. But have you ever wondered
how new procedures are assessed to make sure they are safe and effective?
Have you ever wondered about what anaesthetists do?

This month we look at two of the professional colleges and we're delighted
to have their support. As you would expect these two sites provide
lots of technical information specifically for doctors but they also
provide information in plain English.

One of HealthInsite's newest information partners, the Australian
Safety and Efficacy Register for New Interventional Procedures - Surgical
(ASERNIP-S) is a programme of the Australasian College of Surgeons.
Their ultimate aim is to improve the quality of health care by making
sure that surgeons, health care providers and consumers have access
to evidence-based research. ASERNIP-S assesses new and emerging surgical
technologies and techniques by conducting systematic reviews of the
peer-reviewed literature, establishing clinical audits or trials,
and producing clinical practice guidelines.

ASERNIP-S has just completed two new systematic reviews which provide
useful information about procedures which you may like to discuss
with your doctor.

The systmatic review of holmium laser resection of the prostate is
available at:

http://www.healthinsite.gov.au/shortlinks/sLink.cfm?n=3&l=13

The systmatic review of laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy (Second
update) is available at:

http://www.healthinsite.gov.au/shortlinks/sLink.cfm?n=3&l=14

Plain English versions of other reviews are available at:

http://www.surgeons.org/asernip-s/consumerinfo.htm

More information about ASERNIP-S is available at:

http://www.surgeons.org/asernip-s/

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists is responsible
for the examination and qualification of specialist anaesthetists
in Australia and New Zealand. The College works to maintain the highest
possible standards in the training, practice and ethics of anaesthesia,
intensive care, pain medicine and related branches of medicine.

The ANZCA website includes a comprehensive list of professional guidelines
relating to the standards of anaesthesia. One of the documents deals
with severe pain which is often extremely difficult to treat. In
managing severe pain doctors must consider a range of different factors
and the choice of treatment is likely to vary according to the needs
and circumstances of individual patients.

The College recognises the rights of patients to management of acute
pain, cancer pain and persistent non-cancer pain and has released
a 'Statement on Patients' Rights to Pain Management' available at:

http://www.healthinsite.gov.au/shortlinks/sLink.cfm?n=3&l=15

The site also includes a PowerPoint slide show about what anaesthetists
do and the variety of ways they provide medical care available at:

http://www.healthinsite.gov.au/shortlinks/sLink.cfm?n=3&l=16

More information about ANZCA can be found at:
